Increased safety on A4 motorway between Schiphol and Roelofarendsveen
Tuesday 2 August 2016
The number of incidents on the A4 motorway between Schiphol and Roelofarendsveen has decreased significantly in recent years. This is clear from the overview of incidents on IM roads in the period 2010 - 2015 published today by Stichting Incident Management Nederland. The document shows that the number of traffic incidents on the westbound carriageway of the A4 in the direction of The Hague between the driver location signs 10.0 and 24.9 decreased from 173 in 2010 to 66 in 2015. This is a decrease of more than 60%. The number of collisions on the other half of the road also decreased.
Ringvaart of the Haarlemmermeer Polder
The section of the A4 motorway concerned has been reconstructed extensively in recent years. A parallel lane was added between Hoofddorp and Nieuw-Vennep to separate local and transit traffic and the aqueduct under the Ringvaart of the Haarlemmermeer Polder at Roelofarendsveen was widened. Another road project with positive results was the widening of the A2 motorway, where the number of incidents dropped considerably particularly in the vicinity of Utrecht: in 2010, the lane heading towards Amsterdam experienced 74 incidents between driver location signs 60.0 and 65.0, but decreased to 29 in 2015.
The overview published by Stichting Incident Management Nederland shows how many incidents occurred between the years 2010 and 2015 on the roads subject to incident management. These roads are broken down into five-kilometre road sections and roads with separate lanes are awarded a score for each lane. The two tables below show which road sections experienced the highest number of incidents in 2010 and in 2015.
