Farewell to the Mohicans
Wednesday 11 May 2016 (update June 20, 2016)
Over the past months, three big names from the Dutch recovery sector have disappeared from the scene. Hoogenraad Transport, the only recovery company in the Netherlands with a Swiss-style warehouse, was taken over in February by De Eerste Arnhemse Wegen- en Sleepdienst Van Amerongen BV. Van Amerongen was in turn taken over on 5 April by the Van Eijck Groep. Finally, on 22 April, it was announced that the activities of Sleep- en Takeldienst Vrolijk were to be taken over by Smits Kraan- en Sleepbedrijf.
Sander en Wijnand Hoogenraad
For several decades, Hoogenraad based in Leersum have been responsible for recovery of all vehicles stranded due to an accident on the A12 motorway or elsewhere on the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. With pain in their heart, Directors Wijnand and Sander Hoogenraad decided this year to dispose of the recovery activities. With a fleet of some ten transporters, the company has shifted its focus to car transport work.
Henk van Amerongen
Van Amerongen is one of the ten largest IM recovery companies in the Netherlands, and for several generations has been the go-to recovery operator in Arnhem and the surrounding district. The company was taken over in 2004 by Logicx, but in 2010 was reacquired by Henk van Amerongen, one of the founding fathers of the Dutch recovery sector, and probably the most charismatic figure in the industry.
Peter van Leeuwen (R) on the occasion of the takeover of Ouke Baas in 2006
In 1979, the Van Leeuwen family acquired Sleep- en Takeldienst Vrolijk. For a considerable length of time, the activities were run from a mobile home in a field in Sloten. The business later moved to the Oostelijke Handelskade in Amsterdam-Oost and then, following construction of the Piet Heintunnel, to the Papaverweg in Amsterdam-Noord.
The departure of these three icons from the Dutch recovery sector marked the final quarter of the contract period 2013 - 2016 for the operators. During the course of that quarter, 16,213 recovery operations were carried out on the main IM roads. The average arrival time was 14:07 minutes. Corrected for delays as a result of congestion, the figure amounted to 12:23 minutes.
Takelservice Duyts provided a superb performance. In the new contract period 2016 - 2019 this company will no longer be an IM recovery operator. Nonetheless, Duyts still delivered a topflight performance in the last quarter. On the A2 motorway near Weert, Duyts achieved an arrival time for all recovery callouts received within the twenty-minute daytime standard, and twenty-five minutes at night. This score was well above the contractual standard that demands that the set time is achieved in at least 90% of all cases.
Haulo Berging in Alkmaar performed equally well. The company, which on 1 April lost the majority of its IM recovery work, achieved a 100% score in the first three months of 2016 in the three adjacent districts NH114, NH116 and NH122 to the west of Alkmaar. The table below shows which companies carried out 95% or more of their recovery operations with an arrival time within the 20-minute daytime and 25-minute night-time standard, over the past quarter. Companies that arrived at all reported incidents within the standard time are marked with an asterisk. Stichting Incident Management Nederland would like to thank all IM recovery companies for their efforts.
