Scrapheap on the A28
Monday 11 January 2016
On 5 and 6 January, as a result of slippery road conditions on the IM roads in Drenthe and Friesland, 10 times as many accidents were reported as normal. On the five most important IM roads in the area, IM recovery companies swung into action on 73 occasions, between 18.00 hours on 5 January and 24.00 hours on 6 January. During the same period on 8 and 9 December, there were only eight incident call-outs. On 15 and 16 December, numbers were even lower.
The black ice hit hardest on the A28 motorway near Beilen. Over a 20 kilometre-stretch of motorway, 21 collisions took place in just 30 hours. There was also much activity on other IM roads. On the A37 motorway between Hoogeveen and Emmen, during the reporting period, more accidents took place per kilometre of road than on the A10 orbital around Amsterdam. The table below provides an overview of the number of accidents on IM roads in the Northern Netherlands.
