Changing of the guard

Tuesday 5 April 2016 (update May 19 2016)
BCU-Vreugdenhil has become the largest IM recovery company in the Netherlands. In the new network of IM recovery companies that set to work last Friday, the combined businesses BCU and Vreugdenhil Berging are responsible for sixteen IM work areas in the Provinces of Zuid-Holland and Utrecht. In 2015, these sixteen work areas accounted for 14% of all recoveries on the main road network. Four other recovery companies - Bergnet, Wolves, Logicx and Barendregt - together covered a further 36% of the market. The remaining half of recoveries on the main road network will be shared by 62 mostly smaller recovery companies over the next few years.

Among the new IM recovery companies are six businesses that did not receive IM jobs before 1 April. The largest of them is Vrolijk in Amsterdam Noord, followed by De Haan in Bleiswijk and Renses in Alkmaar. Sixteen recovery companies from the previous contract period failed to return this year. They include companies in Limburg and Noord-Brabant who dropped out despite their excellent performance. Hoogenraad Transport from Leersum also disappeared from the scene. That company was taken over on 1 March 2016 by Van Amerongen.

Recovery companies are contracted for a period of three years, with the possibility of extending their contract through to 31 March 2020. A list of the new recovery companies in order of market share appears in the table below. The table also lists the positions occupied by these companies at the end of 2015 in the list of largest IM recovery operators. For each recovery company, the table also lists the number of honourable mentions for fast arrival times over the past contract period. Market shares are based on numbers of recoveries per district in 2015.

The figures for honourable mentions demonstrate that the largest companies are not always the fastest. A recovery company receives an honourable mention if in any given quarter, in a particular district, it far exceeds the contractual standard. This can take the form of achieving an arrival time within the standard time for 95% of all recoveries or, in particular, of completing all recoveries in a given quarter within the standard time.

The list of honourable mentions is headed by Barendregt and Bergnet, numbers four and one respectively on the list of largest IM recovery companies in the period 2013 - 2016. The elite among the fast recovery companies otherwise consists of small companies. The most remarkable performance was indeed achieved by Haulo Berging from Alkmaar, Delta Berging in Flevoland and Ben Heiltjes in Cuijk. For three full years, these companies accepted nothing but the best. An overview of the honourable mentions achieved by each recovery company in the period 2013 - 2016 appears in the table below.
